Savage

Played this game with friends who never played a board game in their life, we were up and flying in no time. We loved the theme, the haunt mechanic is exciting, never knowing what you get in terms of the second half of the game. Each game is a funny story to tell afterwards to your board game buddies.

I bought this in a

I bought this in a bit of a hurry, looking for a family game for Christmas. The only criteria was to be teen+. This was one of the first suggestions in the results, and, under time pressure, I made a quick decision that it sounded good, and suitable to play with my 15 year old daughter, my 23 year old son, his girlfriend who would be staying with us for the first time, and myself (all board game fanatics) and my husband (less so). It wasn't exactly what I was expecting - I had somehow managed to overlook that it was slightly horror based, and when we opened it, I was worried it would freak my daughter and I out and keep us awake at night. However - in no way did it disappoint us. It has a slightly similar underlying idea to an old childhood favourite still played (and remade in various incarnations) amongst all my family today - the now out of print Sorcerer's Cave - but built on this to add many new ideas and dimensions. The twists are clever - that one player, chosen by a random set of criteria, turns rogue at some point in the game, is an idea I've not seen in any of the bazillion games our family have played over 40+ years. That we could play this over and over and each time the scenario played would have a different story, a different layout, and a different set of sub-rules is also genius. We only had time to play twice before my son and his gf went home, but the two games were very different. All in, this is really good game pretty much unlike any other games we have. Although the way the game is played means play is different each time, the initial play is the same, and we picked this up very quickly from clear well presented instructions. My only negative comment would be that the little plastic markers used to mark attributes such as sanity and strength were too loose and got easily dislodged. I would absolutely recommend this game to a family with older or adult children, or to any family like mine who laughs and fights over board games and wine whenever grown siblings get together. Just be aware, it is a bit horror/ghosty in its storylines. Leave the lights on. But buy it.
